You still need to be careful. The primary difference between direct debit and standing order is that a DD is taken based on instructions from the person who receives the money, whereas an SO is on instructions from the person paying.

So she could still start taking the money on the schedule she proposed.

However, you can ask your bank at any time to refund any DD payment, no questions asked, under the Direct Debit Guarantee Scheme.

That might cause problems with your tenancy though, so I'd suggest you talk first to CAB or the Housing Rights Association in such a case.

Alternatively, cancel the DD again, and set up a new SO into the new account - if her primary reason for wanting to change was just to consolidate their accounts, then she should still be happy with that. Plus, then you're in complete control of it, and your finances aren't at the permanent whim of your LL.

Sound advice, ladies, and duly noted. I have set up a direct debit to the new account in exactly the same way as the previous one. I await the next visit when she realises. Wonder what she'll bring me this time... ;)

Grannymar is right. She may be a lovely person (and I love your cat analogy by the way) but thats just not fair and it sounds as though someone did some sums for her in order to re-jig your rent paying schedule in a way that benefits just her....sometimes with humans as well as with kittys, you have to be firm and stand up to them*kitty nods furiously as she tucks into her second meal today*.

Did you sign anything?
Did she tell you what was on the paper?

If the answers are no I would take it up with her. Tell her you will pay it like the Rate instsllments - They're over 10 months. so you will pay what ever you normally pay over 12.

Well she never mentioned an increase in rent. Surely she would have to give notice. Check with CAB
