An email to treasure

There are key moments in everyone’s life.

The moment when you get your exam results. The moment when you start your new school. The moment you have your first kiss. The moment you sit behind the wheel of your first car.

For me, the latest ‘key moment’ was two nights ago, when I suddenly realised, with a huge, aching, empty pang that scared me a little bit, just how crazily I missed my young students from Korea. For someone who used to hate children and would never in her life have dreamt of becoming a teacher, you’ve got to admit that that’s quite a moment. I looked at the school website and saw pictures of the Christmas party, and my little friends getting their presents from Santa. I actually got tears in my eyes, and a big, goofy smile on my face. Me!!! I don’t even like children!

OK, I can’t claim that one to be true any more. So I wrote them a little message on their class message board, saying that I missed them, hoped they were being good for their new teacher, and would see them soon. I got a few cute responses from individual children, both in Korean and painstakingly typed English. Then, today, I received the following from an entire class and the school director. Honestly, it made my day – and confirmed to me that I’m in the right job at last, as I don’t believe any job could ever make me feel as joyful as this message did.
